Congratulations to the Ladies Golf Team in the Mail on Sunday competition, Anne Meagher and Maura Cawley, who defeated Castlerea Golf Club Ladies team 3 and 2 on Friday the 5th March.

Learn to play Golf.

Lessons for beginners and newcomers to the game are starting during the month of May.

The Club together with the ILGU and the Irish Sports Council are offering aspiring Lady Golfers the chance to take up the sport. This unique programme offers women of any age the most comprehensive introduction to the game and is open to everyone. Women who wish to take part in the programme don't need to be a member of a Golf Course or even own a golf club as all equipment will be provided.

Starting on Thursday May 14th 2009, PGA professional Eddie Treacy will be hosting 3 coaching sessions covering all aspects of the game. The sessions run over 3 consecutive weeks. The Programme has been running for several years in Clubs throughout the country. It has proved to be very successful in making it easy for women to start playing golf and for them to progress to a level where they can compete with others and enjoy playing a healthy, relaxing sport for the rest of their lives.

This has now completed and was thoroughly enjoyable and successful with 28 ladies participating. Inevitably some ladies fell by the wayside but some 13 followed through and are now active members of the club

A Summer School for 8 - 18 year olds was held early in July and some 30 young folk participated. The School was run by a former member of the club, Conor Lavin, who is now a Teaching Professional at the K Club at Straffan. This was a huge success and has opened up a new tier of players within the club. All the youngsters attending the courses were given Junior membership for the rest of the season and many are enthusiastically playind on a daily basis. Competitions are held for them each Saturday between 9 - 11am

Annual General Meetings

The Annual General Meetings of the Club were held on October 27th for the Ladies and Gents Clubs and on November 13th for the Parent Club. The Parennt Club AGM was preceded bu a Mass for Deceased Members held in the Clubhouse and celebrated by Fr. Leo Henry a former Club Captain.

Both the Ladies and Gents Committees are working behind the scenes to come up with the full fixture list for 2010

The Christmas Scramble is scheduled for November 29th as the last event of the year. With the recent torrential rains it is likely this event will be rescheduled. Watch this space for further information.

CONNACHT GOLF COMPETITIONS

The Club has teams participating in 7 Competitions this year.

Starting on May 9th the Pierce Purcell Shield first round match will be against Ballinasloe. Sadly we were knocked out in the first round. Good experience for next year.

May 25th sees a local Derby for the Seniors against Castlerea. They will be hoping to improve on last year and reach their Zone final and who knows get even further.

Once again the old contemptables soldiered on only to be defeated in a very close match versus Mountbellew who sadly screwed up on their handicap declaration and we were reinstated only to be defeated, as last year, in the zone final against Athlone

June 3rd, another local derby, this time against the old enemy Carrick on Shannon for the Mixed Foursomes.

The old enemy proved too strong and we were eliminated at the first hurdle.

June 20th battle will commence against Strandhill in the Junior Cup followed by the opening round of the Jack O'Sullivan Competition agains Boyle on June 25th.

Sad to report but in each of these competitions we fell at the first fence

The Cecil Ewing Shield and the Connacht Shield Competitions commence on July 11th and August 4th.

Finally, again sad to report, we fell at the first fence in both these competitions .

Whilst the success rate in competitions appears to be bad the amount of fun generated by competitive play has given all our team members a new found enthusiasm to tackle the challenges with vigour next year - watch this space
