Captains Drive-in / 18 hole scramble.

The fine weather saw an excellent turnout for the Captains Drive in on Sunday the 21st March. The drive in was followed by an 18 hole scramble sponsored by Eugene Madden. There was great scoring with Nuala Frain, John Corcoran and Sean McLoughlin succeeding on the day. Ann Towey and Mark Frain would like to thank Eugene Madden for organizing and sponsoring the scramble and everyone that turned out to support the day.

Foreclub Alliance 2010

Ballaghaderreen Golf Club welcomed Captains and players from the 4 Clubs making up the Alliance, Castlerea, Boyle, Strokestown and ourselves. on Friday 16th April. . A mixed scramble took place to start the evening at which the programme of events for the 2010 season was announced. The Scramble was won by Ballaghaderreen Captain Mark Frain, playing with Margaret Cox and Maureen Claffey.

Jim McDonnell, Captain Castlerea, thanked the Roscommon Herald for its continued sponsorship of the Alliance and the programme of events were announced as follows;-

May 1st/2nd Castlerea

June 5th/6th Ballaghaderreen

August 21st/22nd Boyle

September 25th/26th Strokestown.

The Roscommon Herald Perpetual Trophy was presented to Mark Frain of Ballaghaderreen for safe keeping until the winning club of the 2010 competitions claimed it for the following year. The top 6 cards for Ladies and Gents from each club will count for the award of the Perpetual Trophy with individual prizes for the best scores at each competition.

The evening concluded with a buffet supper and a lot of craic.

Congratulations.

Congratulations to the Ladies Golf Team in the Mail on Sunday competition, Anne Meagher and Maura Cawley, who defeated Castlerea Golf Club Ladies team 3 and 2 on Friday the 5th March. Sadly the team lost to a team from Carrick on Shannon on the 17th hole in the following round.

Annual General Meetings 2009

The Annual General Meetings of the Club were held on October 27th for the Ladies and Gents Clubs and on November 13th for the Parent Club. The Parennt Club AGM was preceded bu a Mass for Deceased Members held in the Clubhouse and celebrated by Fr. Leo Henry a former Club Captain.

Both the Ladies and Gents Committees are working behind the scenes to come up with the full fixture list for 2010

The Christmas Scramble was scheduled for November 29th as the last event of the year. With the torrential rains it was hoped this event would be rescheduled. However the weather won and the course was flooded for a number of weeks.

CONNACHT GOLF COMPETITIONS 2009

The Club had teams participating in 7 Competitions.

Starting on May 9th the Pierce Purcell Shield first round match was against Ballinasloe. Sadly we were knocked out in the first round. Good experience for next year.

May 25th saw a local Derby for the Seniors against Castlerea. They hoped tp improve on last year and reach their Zone final and who knows get even further.

Once again the old contemptables soldiered on only to be defeated in a very close match versus Mountbellew who sadly screwed up on their handicap declaration and we were reinstated only to be defeated, as last year, in the zone final against Athlone

June 3rd, another local derby, this time against the old enemy Carrick on Shannon for the Mixed Foursomes.

The old enemy proved too strong and we were eliminated at the first hurdle.

June 20th battle commenced against Strandhill in the Junior Cup followed by the opening round of the Jack O'Sullivan Competition agains Boyle on June 25th.

Sad to report but in each of these competitions we fell at the first fence

The Cecil Ewing Shield and the Connacht Shield Competitions commenced on July 11th and August 4th.

Finally, again sad to report, we fell at the first fence in both these competitions .

Whilst the success rate in competitions appears to be bad the amount of fun generated by competitive play has given all our team members a new found enthusiasm to tackle the challenges with vigour next year.
